History

Established by the will of John Newlands, a Jamaican-plantation owner in 1799[1], the school was originally located on Marjoribanks Street. The current building dates from 1831 and was designed by R & R Dickson.[2] This building was taken over by West Lothian College in the 1960s, when the school moved to its current location.
The Academy was also used as annex to Balbardie Primary School in the 1960s and 70s.
